Beyond Resumes: AirAsia’s Takeoff into a Skills-Based Talent Ecosystem

AirAsia, the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline, recognized that traditional hiring methods are no longer effective in addressing talent mismatches and optimising internal mobility. To tackle these challenges, the airline adopted a skills-based approach and developed a comprehensive skills framework aligned with job roles — both operations and corporate. This framework defines both technical and behavioral competencies, enabling transparent career pathways and supporting a more holistic, data-driven approach to talent management.

Challenges

AirAsia shifted from title-based management to a skills-first framework by working on:

Decentralized Skills Library:

The absence of a unified system made it challenging to assess employee capabilities across the organization consistently.

Localizing Skills Dataset:

Adapting skills to AirAsia’s unique context required focused collaboration and effort.
